In summary...
The Center for the Book (www.read.gov/cfb ) in the Library of Congress in
Washington works with its 56 Affiliates (the 50 states, the District of Columbia,
Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and Northern
Marianas) to fulfill the Center’s mission of promoting books, reading, libraries and
literacy nationwide. It also promotes our nation’s diverse literary heritage.
Each Center for the Book affiliate selects a book to represent their state’s literary
heritage in the “Great Reads from Great Places” program, which the state
centers for the book promote in the Parade of States at the National Book
Festival in Washington DC.
Previously, the selection was limited to a book written for children or young
adults. This year the decision was made to also include titles written for adults to
celebrate readers of all ages.
